If you wonder what is a "Shoe Last",
it might be the reason why you can't draw
any great shoe from imagination yet.
A shoe is hard to draw for design beginners.
I remember how much I struggled for years,
especially for the perspective view!
I didn't fail because of my lack of drawing talent.
I knew the skills of sketching of shoes could be acquired.
But I didn't know how to.
I had no idea about
the sketching method to follow.
So I kept trying to figure out alone.
It took me a few years to come out with my "shoe sketching formula".
This is why I am so happy to share
with you what I've learned. : )
NOTE: To start shoe drawing,
I've prepared this video tutorial
to get started on How to draw a shoe (side view)
Below, I share with you the 2 Must-Known steps
if you want to start drawing amazing shoes easy!
Follow the tutorials and let me know how it goes! : )
TIP 11| Draw a Shoe Easy? Start with the "Shoe Last".
WHAT IS A SHOE LAST?
A Shoe Last is a standard shape of a foot
that shoemakers use to make shoes in order to fit the human foot.
Better the quality, the better the comfort and aesthetic of the shoe.
Footwear Designers use the shoe last mainly for the shoe proportion.
So they can draw their ideas with full creativity!
When I worked at Adidas headquarter in Germany,
there was an impressive storeroom of Shoe Last.
Depending on your future shoe design,
as a Footwear designer,
you would choose the appropriate form.
Some forms are slimmer
(i.e. Running shoe for lightness)
While others are bulkier
(i.e. BasketBall shoe or Tennis shoe for the high ankle support).
The 2 Steps to Draw a Shoe
To draw a shoe, you need to:
Step 1- Draw the shoe last (with good proportion)
Step 2- Create your shoe design using the shoe last as a template.
If you skip Step 1,
you will stagnate and spend years at trying to draw shoes with struggles.
Remember: Drawing the Shoe Last first is the only way to draw the design of the shoe easily, fast, and with quality.
Otherwise, you will keep drawing shoes with clumsy proportions forever. : /
If your proportion goes wrong, even if the design may look cool, we'll have an awkward feeling.

TIP 12| A shoe last aims to be feminine, sexy.
Chou-Tac Chung – Sketching high heels shoe last for a woman
After you know how to draw a "Shoe Last" with good proportion, there is a mental trick to level up.
What really helped me to improve my sketches, even more, is actually not another drawing technique, but a mindset, a feeling of feminine sensuality – (even if the shoe last is made for man).
"A shoe is not only a design, but it's a part of your body language, the way you walk. The way you're going to move is quite dictated by your shoes."
Christian Louboutin
- Anatomy art books are great, but also observe foot from models or your female lover.
- Keep in mind how sexy and attractive they are, then draw your shoe last with that sensual feeling – somehow "feline".
- Your research of form will naturally find the right curve, and get proper proportion, – yet feminine.
